About

Following his award-winning survey of Ravelís complete solo piano works, Bertrand Chamayou takes on some of the most brilliant yet fiendishly virtuosic music in the French Romantic repertoire on his new Saint-SaŽns album, drawing together the two most famous of the composer-pianistís five piano concertos Ė the epic No.2 and the irresistibly exotic No.5 ĎThe Egyptianí Ė alongside a bouquet of lesser-known solo pieces and ťtudes that will delight pianophiles. These include the effervescent yet notoriously difficult …tude en forme de Valse with its breathtaking bravura finale, and the entrancing Les Cloches de Las Palmas inspired by the bells Saint-SaŽns heard ringing out in the Canary Islands.

ĎIím always charmed by Saint-SaŽns,í says Chamayou. ĎThereís an attraction to the exotic, the bizarre, sensual fantasy, thatís very curious for a composer that we think of as so academic. And thereís a real sense of voyage in the music of Saint-SaŽns that I find fascinating.í He is joined by the Orchestre National de France and its formidable conductor Emmanuel Krivine for an album that promises fireworks, champagne and just a few puffs of opium.

Reviews

I would go as far as placing Chamayou and Krivine at or near the top of the myriad recordings currently available [G minor Concerto]. ... The Egyptian Concerto (No 5) is hardly less successful. ... Chamayou never loses sight of the fact that this is a virtuoso piano concerto. One can well believe that Saint-SaŽns found his inspiration for the opening measures of the finale in the pounding of the paddle steamerís wheels as it travelled up the Nile.  Jeremy Nicholas
