At the heart of the programme, though, is one of Schumann’s great recognised cycles, the Kerner-Lieder of Op 35, which Gerhaher presents as an exploration of loss and remembrance of a former happy life. As such, the outdoorsy numbers come across in almost abstract terms – attempts to recapture recalled feelings and urges – while his ‘Stille Tränen’, superbly sung, is characterised by something like quiet but futile defiance. ...
