In spite of its youthfulness, the Leipzig vocal ensemble Sjaella, made up of six women’s voices, gets around in the world quite a bit on its concert tours. As a result, the members continually discover new songs that bring them closer to the soul of each country. With “Meridiane”, Sjaella has conceived a series that features the songs of the various countries that the members have personally become acquainted with. The first volume is dedicated to the North with songs from Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, etc. Homogenous and individual, light and robust, precise and free – it is this multifaceted nature that characterizes the sound of Sjaella. The six vocalists found their common path years ago and yet time and again discover new branch-offs. They are open for new influences, love musical diversity, and have the courage to extend boundaries. Their repertoire is correspondingly wide, and they feel themselves at home in the most varied genres. This many-sidedness and the closeness to their audience has resulted in engagements at renowned music festivals at home and abroad, guest appearances on radio and television, and first prize at international vocal music competitions.
