About
Praised by the New York Times for having “traversed the palette of emotions” with “gorgeous tone and an edge of-seat intensity” and described by Diario de Menorca as an “ideal performer” who offers “elegance, virtuosity, and great expressive power”, Spanish cellist-composer Andrea Casarrubios has played extensively as a soloist and chamber musician on the international stage. Caminante for cello and choir, composed by Casarrubios to a text by Spanish poet Antonio Machado, is a meditative, mystical work performed here by the Voce Chamber Singers.
The powerful poetry of Pablo Neruda is used in La Libertad se levant llorando (Liberty rose weeping) for pre-recorded voice, violin and cello, and Speechless is an introspective work for cello and percussion.
Casarrubios’s Crisol: Improvisations on a theme by Haydn for solo piano are heard alongside the Haydn Piano Sonata no.39, which inspired her, and fragments of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata no.30, op.109, are amongst the diverse influences audible in Maktub for three cellos.
