About

This new recording from the Choir of York Minster and Robert Sharpe, captures this excellent choir in the spine-tingling acoustic of this great cathedral. The music reflects a continuallydeveloping tradition, and offers the listener repertoire from the last hundred years, written specifically for York Minster and its Choir: settings of texts for Mattins and Evensong; anthems suitable for those services and for the Eucharist; and compositions for special celebrations and circumstances.

We hear from three successive Masters of the Music whose combined service spans nearly a century; other members of the Minster foundation; and significant contemporary choral composers, including Judith Bingham and Francis Grier, offering new, commissioned interpretations of traditional texts. Some of the music recorded here is imbued with personal significance and reveals the ‘extended family’ dimension of this great Cathedral, whose worship is enhanced and beautified by the unique variety of ‘Music for the Choir of York Minster’.

York Minster is one of the largest historic church buildings in northern Europe and its choir contributes to the daily round of sung worship held there for nearly a millenium. Under the directorship of Robert Sharpe since 2008, the choir has established a growing international reputation.
