Full of hope, heroism and joyful optimism Copland’s Third Symphony is considered the ‘Great American Symphony’; it is perhaps most famous for its finale in which Copland incorporates his Fanfare for the Common Man, an exhilarating conclusion that leaves listeners uplifted.
With scintillating indigenous melodies, complex rhythms and highly percussive orchestration, Chávez’s Sinfonía india is the perfect piece to end the programme and showcase this passionate, flamboyant and brilliantly incisive orchestra.
Musical America’s 2019 Conductor of the Year, Carlos Miguel Prieto is known for his charismatic conducting and dynamic interpretations. Prieto served as Principal Conductor of The Orchestra of the Americas from its inception until 2011 when he was appointed its Music Director. Having conducted over 100 world premieres of works by Mexican and American composers, Prieto is renowned for championing and commissioning the music of Latin American composers.
Led by Artistic Advisor Plácido Domingo, The Orchestra of the Americas is a world-class symphony orchestra made up of gifted young musicians, aged 18 to 30, representing twenty-five countries. The orchestra has performed more than 350 concerts since its 2002 inaugural tour and returns to Mexico in July and August 2019 on a coast-to-coast tour of concerts.
“Carlos Chávez’s Sinfonía india uses a set of pre-Hispanic themes from his native Mexico…it’s a lot of fun in its use of chugging cross-rhythms, deftly controlled by the conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto.” - The Times
“The orchestra’s overall sound gave colour, character and conviction no matter what they played.” - The Scotsman
“Prieto had every section in perfect balance with his precise and rigorous conducting, and the strings…were particularly poised.” - The Herald
