About

The Viennese-born Carl Czerny (1791–1857) is best remembered for his countless pedagogical studies – hundreds and hundreds of them. But Czerny’s astonishing fecundity – his opus numbers go up to 861, but there is much more music than that – has served to obscure the fact that he was an important composer in his own right, his music forming a link between Beethoven (his teacher) and Liszt (his student), between the Classical and Romantic eras. The works recorded here – all for the first time – reflect the brilliance of his own playing and were intended to impress the salons of Biedermeyer Vienna.

Jingshu Zhao, one of a number of outstanding young pianists to emerge from China, was born in 1991 in Wuhan. Her talent first became evident when she started to play the piano at the age of three. She graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Keng Zhou and Baili Fang, and then continued working for her Masters degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studied with Jon Nakamatsu and Mack McCray, and for her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance with Joseph Banowetz at the University of North Texas. After winning a number of prizes in national competitions in China in 2010–11, she has since performed extensively in both the People’s Republic of China and the United States.
