About

Tŷ Cerdd Records’ last release of 2019 presents vocal works by two remarkable composers: Rhian Samuel (born 1944) and Clara Schumann (1819-96) – women who have played an important role in the development of song during their lifetimes.

Performed by Welsh pianist Jocelyn Freeman with American-Dutch soprano Katharine Dain and Welsh bass-baritone Paul Carey Jones, the collection displays the beauty, optimism and integrity of the composers’ musical languages, and juxtaposes the brilliant classical mastery and vibrant word-setting of Clara Schumann against the more angular boldness of Rhian Samuel.

Aiming to provide a window into the oeuvre of both artists, this selection of songs explores a wide range of text-settings and temperaments: from a tender response to Rückert, through poignant settings of Beckett, to May Sarton’s epiphanous ‘Celebration’.
