Fittingly, Osorio opens The French Album with Fauré’s exquisite Pavane and concludes with the ever-popular Pavane pour une infante défunte by Fauré’s student, Ravel.
The Mexican-born, European-trained pianist, who studied at the Paris Conservatory with Bernard Flavigny and Monique Haas, offers eight of Debussy’s pictorial Préludes, each with its unique sound world, including the mystical La Cathédrale engloutie, one of the most stunning pieces ever composed for piano. Another audience favourite is Debussy’s evocative Claire de lune from his Suite bergamasque. Providing contrast, Rameau’s whimsical Les Tricotets conjures the back-and-forth motion of knitting needles.
A set of Spanish-flavoured works include Chabrier’s Cuban-inspired Habanera; Debussy’s lively La Puerta del Vino, depicting sailors carousing and enjoying their wine, and La soirée dans Grenade, where the piano imitates the sound of a guitar; and Ravel’s Alborado del gracioso, brimming with Iberian rhythms.
Reviewing Osorio’s earlier Cedille album of works by Debussy and Liszt, Classics Today praised the pianist’s “astute ear for tone color, superb textural control, and ability to spin long legato lines with little help from the sustain pedal”; the Chicago Tribune commended his “finely-chiseled detail and generous color palette”; and the Toronto Star declared, “Osorio’s playing is faultless”.
The French Album is Osorio’s eighth Cedille Records release. His discography also includes recordings on the Artek, ASV, CBS, EMI, IMP, and Naxos labels.
