About
A professor for many years, Danish composer Per Nørgård (b. 1932) has been loudly praised and awarded great prizes around the world.
From the 1960s Denmark became a leader of the European avant avant-garde, to a substantial degree through Nørgård’s contribution.
The series of six works with the shared title, Fragment, were written around 1960, just after Nørgård found that he had the blessing of the avant-garde for his ideas. The short Fragment V (1961), included in this album, remains the most frequently performed piece from the set, and was probably Nørgård’s first encounter with his famous infinity series.
This album features several world-premiere recordings, including Nørgård’s Quintet, op.1, which was written in the early 1950s, just after the young composer’s school days.
Performed by six high-profile European musicians, the repertoire of this album demonstrates the range of Nørgård's compositions, with chamber and vocal pieces illustrating some of the distinctive steps of his musical journey.
