A 2-CD set of great British contraltos in recordings dating from 1903 to 1981.
‘Time was when the phrase “a good English contralto” conjured up some of the best vocalism to be heard in the western world. Contraltos took their places proudly on opera stage or concert platform alongside the sopranos, mezzo-sopranos, tenors, baritones and basses. Elgar, Brahms, Wagner, Mahler and Sullivan wrote some of their finest music for this voice and, contrary to a mistaken view that has built up in recent years, contraltos were among the most agile of singers.’ – Tully Potter
