Some numbers of this musical revue are clearly at odds with the political-social reality from which they emerged. Franz Grothe’s “Sing mit mir” (“Sing with me”), the opening track of the CD, can be regarded as a prime example of the musical style that the National Socialists wanted for their cinematic diversion: exciting, fleet of foot, and enriched with playful figures in the wind section. The whole thing is driven along by lively pizzicato basses, which are then joined by a kind of Csárdás rhythm.
This was a reference to the Hungarian-born leading lady Marika Rökk, with her “tomboyish mischievousness” and “paprika in her blood” - as the film magazines of 1939 put it. - This music could also have come straight from a Hollywood film of those years.
The Münchner Rundfunkorchester performs this music because its artistic value was hardly disputed even in post-war Germany, and because there are hardly any professional orchestras familiar with this repertoire and able to perform it at a high level.
Famous evergreens from sound films and movies between 1929 and 1961, written by the most renowned film-music and pop composers of the time
Instrumental recordings in congenial arrangements allow the necessary historical distance
The Münchner Rundfunkorchester, known for its versatility and experience in the field of film and light music, performs here under Austrian conductor Ernst Theis.
