This year we have chosen a European musical programme that emphasises our common European musical heritage with its diverse facets and rich musical traditions. In consultation with Maestro Nelsons, a composition by the contemporary Latvian composer Arturs Maskats will be performed for the first time, as well as a work of Mykola Lysenko, a prominent individual in the musical history of Ukraine. Daniel Froschauer, Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic
The programme of the Summer Night Concert 2022 further includes musical favourites from Beethoven and Rossini to Smetana and Dvořák. The soloist on the evenings programme is the French cellist Gautier Capuçon, who performs Camille Saint-Saënss Concerto for Violoncello no.1, op.33. Gautier Capuçon is a true 21st-century ambassador for the cello. In the 2021/22 season, Capuçon appears with, amongst others, the philharmonic orchestras of Vienna/Alain Altinoglu, Munich/Giedre lekyte and New York/Yu Long; the Concertgebouworkest/Myung-whun Chung, Cleveland Orchestra/Michael Tilson Thomas and Mariinsky/Valerie Gergiev.
The conductor of this years concert is Maestro Andris Nelsons who is Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Gewandhauskapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. These two positions, in addition to his leadership of a pioneering alliance between both institutions, have firmly established Grammy Award-winning Nelsons as one of the most renowned and innovative conductors on the international scene today. Both Andris Nelsons and soloist Gautier Capuçon have their Summer Night Concert debuts.
The concert is broadcast on TV and radio in more than 60 countries, and thus reaches an audience of millions.
