About

This new release presents Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685–1750) French Suites for harpsichord. These works were initially to serve as a study of the genre to improve the artistic taste and the harpsichord performance, among others, of the second wife of the composer – Anna Magdalena Bach. This music is still highly appreciated by experts and music lovers today.

The French performance style, which became popular in this part of Europe in the time of Bach, was well-known to the composer thanks to his extensive musical contacts. The form of the suite, consisting of a series of stylised court dances, perfectly suited the harpsichord texture. The results were artistic and at the same time proved to be light compositions which corresponded to the tastes of both 17th-century connoisseurs and today's lovers of beautiful music.

The suites on this recording are performed by Ewa Mrowca, an outstanding Polish harpsichordist, awarded and distinguished for her artistic achievements on a number of occasions, currently cooperating with the Academy of Music in Łódź and the Academy of Music in Kraków as well as with early music ensembles.

Ewa Mrowca was born in Kraków, Poland. She started studying the harpsichord at the age of 12. She graduated with honors from the Music Academy in Kraków, where she studied with Elżbieta Stefańska. She also completed her studies under Nicholas Parle at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, and with Jörg-Andreas Bötticher at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. She performs as a soloist and with early music ensembles including Altberg Ensemble, Musicae Antiquae Collegium Varsoviense, Capella dell'Ospedale della Pietŕ Venezia, and Il Giardino d'Amore. In addition to Poland, she has performed in France, Germany, Spain, China, Japan and the United States.

Reviews

From the first track, the Allemande of Suite no. 4, Ewa Mrowca’s highly sensitive and musical approach to this music is very evident. […] this is wonderful playing.
