About

Daniel Grimwood shines a light on the music of Adolph von Henselt, one of the most admired Romantic composers and piano virtuosi of the 19th century, whom Schumann called the “hero of the pianoforte”. His works have nevertheless been largely forgotten in the last 100 years, making the album a rare collection, recorded in Schwabach in Germany, Henselt’s town of birth.

Pianist Daniel Grimwood is a performer of international renown, combining an exceptional talent, rare versatility and refinement of technique, with an inquisitive and creative personality.

“Titanic variations, lilting waltzes, thundering impromptus and reflective nocturnes send the senses reeling in a blizzard of dazzling pianism” – Stephen Pritchard, The Observer

“The music is outstandingly well made and very tempting to play. Grimwood makes it sound much a whole lot easier than it could possibly be… One of the few musical gifts of a wretched 2016 is the chance to discover Henselt.” – Norman Lebrecht, Musical Toronto

“Besides the technical excellence, it is the atmospheres he creates that set this disc apart, bringing a touch of real class to music that deserves, yet rarely receives, such loving attention.” – Jessica Duchen, BBC Music Magazine (5 stars)

“Grimwood … applies his beautifully coloured and voiced playing to these unexpected gems.” – Stephen Pettitt, The Sunday Times

“Superbly fleet and fluent” – Jeremy Nicholas, Gramophone

“This release … fills the gap in the market, and with such captivating playing, helped also by a well-tuned piano and first-class sound engineering, here’s hoping there’s more to come.” – Marius Dawn, Pianist (5 stars)

“Unalloyed bliss” – Frances Wilson, Cross-Eyed Pianist

“Daniel Grimwood plays the music with great skill and clear affection”
– Robert Hugill, Planet Hugill

“Daniel Grimwood brings such an assurance, such an authority that one is convinced by these works that should prove a real discovery to many.” – Bruce Reader, Classical Reviewer
