About

Always self-critical as a composer, Tchaikovsky was initially unhappy with his Fifth Symphony, but it is hard to think of any other work that is so rich in unforgettable melodies or so opulently coloured. The work soon became the most beloved of all his symphonies amongst audiences deeply moved by the transformation of its Fate motif into an exultant message of triumphant affirmation. Tchaikovsky’s ‘noisy festival piece’, the 1812 Overture is filled with dramatic effects topped by the glorious din of cannon-shots and bells. These classic VOX recordings by the Utah Symphony Orchestra were originally released in 1974, and remain much admired to this day for conductor Maurice Abravanel’s fresh and direct interpretations.

The Elite Recordings for VOX by legendary producers Marc Aubort and Joanna Nickrenz are considered by audiophiles to be amongst the finest sounding examples of orchestral recordings.

The Utah Symphony’s reputation as one of the America’s high-ranking orchestras was the result of the dedicated work of Maurice Abravanel, who was its conductor and musical director for 32 years. Under his baton it received ovations throughout the United States and in the music capitals of Europe for its concerts, and critical acclaim throughout the world for its impressive list of recordings on several labels including VOX.

These VOX Audiophile Edition recordings were first released in 1974. This new edition has re-coupled Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular six symphonies with additional overtures and other orchestral works, and the recordings have been given a new lease of life by going back to the original Elite Recordings master tapes, which have been newly transferred to CD in 192 kHz/24-bit high definition. These Elite Recordings for VOX by producers Marc Aubort and Joanna Nickrenz are already considered to be amongst the finest sounding of orchestral studio recordings, so this newly restored edition of legendary sessions will be eagerly sought out by audiophile collectors and the many fans of these vibrant and now classic performances.

‘As a Tchaikovsky interpreter, Abravanel was superb, full of good ideas about pacing and balance… In the later symphonies, there’s a fresh and direct No. 4 (fine string playing in the pizzicato scherzo, and again a very good finale), an exciting No. 5 where the forward wind balances call to mind Klemperer’s superb EMI recording, and… a dynamic 1812 Overture with well-mixed “special effects” (bells and cannon shots).’ – David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com

‘This set is recommendable for a few key reasons …the cycle is artistically consistent in a way that few conductors before or since have managed [and] the commitment and musical intelligence is never in question.’ – Brian Wigman, Classical Net
