Canadian cellist Cameron Crozman presents Ricercari, a highly original album for solo cello.

Domenico Gabrielli's Ricercari emerged from obscurity in 1689, heralding the beginning of music for unaccompanied cello. They serve as inspiration for six new works by Canadian, French, Colombian, and American composers commissioned by Crozman, whose own exploration is included as the seventh piece in this unique programme.

"Playing Gabrielli's Ricercari has always felt like entering a labyrinth," says Crozman. "Gabrielli truly could not have chosen a better title for these pieces than the Italian word meaning 'to seek out. The works offer both performers and listeners a chance to travel back to a time when music for solo cello was a brand-new idea."

Cameron is fascinated by historical performance practice and exploring lesserknown works while also being engaged in contemporary music and collaborating with world-renowned composers including Kaija Saariaho and Pēteris Vasks. He has premiered a number of new works dedicated to him from solos to concertos and is active in commissioning new music from Canadian composers such as Alexina Louie and Kelly-Marie Murphy.
