After no fewer than three issues of Elgar’s best-known oratorio in the space of two years, here is a fourth. ... Brabbins is a seasoned interpreter of British music of the 19th and 20th centuries and his handling of this large, dramatic canvas is yet another example of his judiciously measured tempos and his understanding of the expressive ‘spasms’ of Elgar’s elastic phraseology. ... This recording is a real treat and a splendid addition to what is already an imposing catalogue, and, given the two high-profile recordings from 2025, from Nicholas Collon and Edward Gardner, it will ultimately boil down to the individual’s personal taste regarding all the details of Brabbins’s own reading of the score.  Jeremy Dibble
