About
The five string quartets collected on this release - from Fire and Ice (1983/84) to Wege zu Harmonie und Chaos - trace the path of a composer who explores the sonic depth and morphological diversity of the quartet. Crystalline and fiery textures, swirling processes of movement, amorphous streams of sound, turbulent wave structures and the apparent standstill in chaos reveal a consistent expansion of the spectral cosmos. Pape combines structural rigour with a poetic vision in which melancholy and illuminating clarity coexist.
Pape, long-time director of the legendary UPIC studio, has worked internationally with leading ensembles. His music has been released on renowned labels such as Mode Records, Stradivarius and ACEL.
The Polish NeoQuartet, one of the most active European ensembles for contemporary music, brings these works to life with precision and intensity. Known for innovative projects and cross-genre collaborations, it has performed at major festivals around the world. With its blend of virtuosity, curiosity and tonal finesse, it is the ideal ensemble to give Pape's multi-layered quartets their full radiance.
This recording invites you on a journey through worlds of sound in which nature, technology and philosophy meet in an infinite spectrum.
