About

The 8th International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1970 although dominated by American pianists with Poland also having two representatives among the six prize-winners, Japan-born Mitsuko Uchida, despite coming second, failed to make the headlines of newspapers reporting on the event and the results. Aged only twenty two, this recording from her performance which took place in the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall, 6–25 October 1970, shows the early brilliance which has seen her become one of the foremost pianists of our time. Accompanied by the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Andrzej Markowski, Mitsuko Uchido displays the brilliant virtuosity which has become synonymous with the Chopin Competition, now one of the most celebrated international piano competitions.
