If you thought that Stravinsky’s late music, from his final, serialist period was forbiddingly austere, think again. A new disc from Daniel Reuss and his Cappella Amsterdam choir, partnered by the instrumentalists of the Noord Nederlands Orkest, reveals an abundance of variety and colour which, while far removed from the Rimsky-like brilliance of the much earlier Firebird, makes for an enthralling sonic journey. Released on the Pentatone label, and captured in vivid sound, it spans four key works composed across a period of a dozen years: In memoriam Dylan Thomas (1954) for tenor, string quartet and four trombones; Threni (1958) for soloists, chorus and orchestra; Introitus (1965) for male chorus and five instruments; and the great Requiem Canticles of 1966 – Stravinsky’s last major work, composed when he was in his mid-eighties and already physically frail.

The application of serial technique (to which Stravinsky had been introduced by his young assistant Robert Craft) and the atmosphere of each work is quite distinctive. They range from the five-note tone-row employed in the setting of Dylan Thomas’s Do not go gentle into that good night, via the symbolic threes and fives of Threni (a spikily gaunt setting of selected verses from the Lamentations of Jeremiah) and the haunting Introitus in memory of T.S. Eliot, to the rhythmically vibrant Requiem Canticles, which seem to glance back retrospectively to such ‘classic’ Stravinsky works as the Symphonies of Wind Instruments, Les Noces, and even the primeval energy of The Rite of Spring. To each of them, Reuss and his musicians bring superb attention to detail, secure technique and multi-faceted characterfulness.

Tenor Guy Cutting is the impassioned soloist in the Dylan Thomas setting, accompanied with great attentiveness by the string players, and framed by the sombre ‘Dirge-Canons’. The male chorus of Introitus demonstrates excellent tonal and dynamic control. But it is above all the combined solo, choral and instrumental contributions in Threni and the Requiem Canticles, aided by Reuss’s expert pacing, shaping, and ear for precision and salient detail, that make this disc so urgently compelling.

So, too, do the generous ‘fillers’, from the 1920 Chorale for harmonium duo (Dirk Luijmes and Martin Logar), which served as the launchpad of the Symphonies of Wind Instruments, and the 1926 setting of the Slavonic Lord’s Prayer Otche nash, to the selection of shorter memorial works, including the Double Canon for string quartet and Epitaphium (both from 1959), and the Elegy for J.F.K. (1964), movingly sung by soprano Berit Norbakken. The a cappella setting of T.S. Eliot’s ‘The dove descending breaks the air’ from the Four Quartets is another miniature jewel.

The disc closes, appropriately, with Stravinsky’s final completed opus, his 1968 arrangements of two Sacred Songs from Hugo Wolf’s Spanisches Liederbuch. These intense, intimate broodings on the mortal wounds of Christ are marvellously articulated by Marianne Beate Kielland’s soft-grained mezzo-soprano. The accompanying booklet includes informative notes by Elmer Schönberger as well as full sung texts and translations. As a single-disc survey of Stravinsky’s late vocal music and related works, this disc could hardly be bettered: enthusiastically recommended!
