About

Maria Tipo’s extraordinary talent was so evident from a young age that she was nicknamed the “Neapolitan Horowitz”. After her early success at the Geneva International Music Competition, she rose to international acclaim within a decade of her recording debut, performing over 300 concerts in the United States. While she later chose to limit her concert activity, Tipo became a revered teacher in Geneva, Bolzano, and Florence, with Martha Argerich once recommending her to Nelson Goerner as “wonderful for you”. She also made a decisive contribution to the legacy of Muzio Clementi, declaring: “I want to show that he is the one who opens the door to Romanticism, which leads directly to Franz Liszt.” Tipo’s recordings – from her legendary Scarlatti and Bach albums to her pioneering complete Clementi sonatas and her deeply lyrical Chopin Nocturnes – remain a precious testimony to an artistry combining astonishing technique with profound human sensitivity.

Maria Tipo (1931–2025) began piano at age three under her mother, Ersilia Cavallo (a pupil of Busoni). She later studied with Alfred Casella and Guido Agosti, winning major competitions such as Geneva (1949) and earning Arthur Rubinstein’s support after the Queen Elisabeth Competition (1952).

After more than 300 early concerts, she gained the nickname “Neapolitan Horowitz”. Later, she reduced her concert activity, partly due to her distaste for a soloist’s isolated lifestyle and societal barriers for women musicians, focusing instead on teaching in Geneva, Bolzano, and Florence.

Starting in the 1980s, she recorded major works for EMI, including Bach’s Goldberg Variations (1986), Busoni’s Bach transcriptions (1988), the Six Partitas (1992), and Chopin’s Nocturnes (1994), always highlighting a warm, singing cantabile and distinctive tempo choices.

Tipo made the first complete recording of Clementi’s sonatas (1970s, Fonit Cetra), showcasing rhythmic drive, bel canto expressivity, and rubato that revealed the overlooked genius of Clementi. This remains one of her most important contributions to the piano discography.

Throughout her career, Tipo emphasised making the piano “sing” like the human voice, a principle inherited from her mother and rooted in the Italian pianistic tradition. This lyrical approach defined her interpretations of Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, and Chopin, culminating in her final Chopin Nocturnes recording before retirement.
