For this third volume devoted to Sergei Prokofiev’s complete piano sonatas, David Jalbert brings together three key works: Sonatas nos. 8 and 9 and Sarcasms, op.17. Sonata no.8, the last in the cycle of “War Sonatas”, alternates between introspective lyricism, dramatic outbursts and virtuosity, reflecting the tension between dream and threat that characterised the era in which it was composed. More intimate, Sonata no.9, dedicated to Sviatoslav Richter, exudes a sophisticated style.
