About
The world of sound created by Nina Šenk is as rich as her sources of inspiration are varied. The instrumental pieces presented on this album, premiered between 2019 and 2024, reflect momentous events in the composer’s life, transform the five elements into sound, were conceived from encounters with literature or the images of a silent movie.
This recording also bears witness of the popularity of the composer’s oeuvre in the world of contemporary music: renowned ensembles from four cities in three different countries have assembled to interpret Nina Šenk’s works on this album.
Nina Šenk studied composition at the Ljubljana Academy of Music (with Pavel Mihelčič) and in Dresden (with Lothar Voigtländer) and at the HMTM Munich (with Matthias Pintscher), where she graduated with a master’s degree in 2008. Her works have been performed at many major festivals (BBC Proms, Salzburg Festival, Donaueschingen Music Days, NY Phil Biennial, Musica Viva Munich, Witten Days for New Chamber Music, Kassel Music Days, Ultraschall Berlin, Takefu Festival, Young Euro Classic, Warsaw Autumn, World Music Days, etc.) and at many concerts around the world by various orchestras and ensembles (Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Scharoun Ensemble, among others). Her numerous awards include the European Prize for Best Composition at the Young Euro Classic Festival (Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, 2004), the Slovenian Prešeren Award 2017, and the Composition Prize at the 8th Johann Joseph Fux Opera Composition Competition (2020–2023) for Canvas. Since 2019, Nina Šenk has been a member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. As part of Wien Modern 2024, Nina Šenk was awarded the Erste Bank Prize.
