About

"Russian composer Ivan Wyschnegradsky (1917-79) devised pianos and harps specifically to deal with the demands of microtoal music. He started his 24 Preludes in Quarter-Tone System in 1934 and completed them in 1970. Each one has a distinct character but the idiom is merely licence for his microtonal imagination. He hears extraordinary supple relationships between tonal centres and writes genuine microtonal melodies, rather than conventional tonality with  inflections. Charles Ives' famous Three Quarter-Tone Pieces for two pianos and the Three Page Sonata supplement; the pianists are Josef Christof and Stefan Schleiermacher." The Wire December 2006
