About

Carl Nielsen’s Woodwind Quintet from 1922 is a major work in the international chamber music literature. On this new release the Quintet is featured together with other chamber music works by the composer involving one or more wind players. The music selection ranges in time from Nielsen’s early youth to his mature mastery, and the selection also includes three small pieces from the music for The Mother, including the classic The Fog is Lifting.

When Carl Nielsen composed his Woodwind Quintet, the genre was only then being rediscovered after hardly having been cultivated since classics like Reicha and Danzi. It may be that the Dane’s experiment with unaccustomed colourings and extended solo passages stemmed partly from a wish to write music that suited the individual temperaments of the five musicians who gave the work its first performance – indeed to some extent it portrayed them. This has at any rate not prevented wind quintets all over the world from playing and recording this modern masterpiece.

The chamber music works on this CD have been recorded by the Danish Trio Ondine and the Diamond Ensemble.
