About

A quick way to dispel any doubts about de Pachmann’s technical prowess is heard on this disc in Liszt’s Rigoletto Paraphrase - he makes it his own by starting in the middle of the piece and altering it as it proceeds.

At the turn of the century concert pianists rarely got the opportunity to hear each other. Concert pianists were expected to play from memory and in many cases, the pianist had not looked at the printed notes for twenty years or so. No wonder inaccuracies crept in! It is very possible that de Pachmann was playing many of these pieces ‘by ear’. The wayward nuances in Chopin’s Op.36 Impromptu are not at all offensive while the Op.47 Ballade is given a new lease of life in Pachmann’s hands.
