Verdi wrote Luisa Miller in 1849, so as a work of art it sits between the early “galley operas” and the acclaimed masterpieces of the latter period that include “Rigoletto” and ”Traviata”, and consequently it was somewhat neglected over the years. However, a reappraisal began in the 1970s when artists of the calibre of Caballé, Scotto, Ricciarelli, Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras started to perform the key roles in major productions of the opera. It was during this period that the recording presented here was made.
Loosely based on Schiller's "Kabale und Liebe", the story of Luisa Miller is that of an old soldier's daughter who falls in love with a young aristocrat called Rudolfo. Tragically, however, the relationship is crushed in the machinations of a provincial court. Verdi takes up this theme of impossible love and embellishes the opera with some of his finest arias.
