Gian Francesco Malipiero was an extremely influential musical protagonist who is remembered today more for his Vivaldi and Monteverdi editions than for his own multifaceted and truly remarkable oeuvre. Composer Luigi Dallapiccola claimed that Malipiero was the “most important musical figure to develop in Italy following Verdi’s death.”
Just how remarkable Malipiero’s oeuvre was can be aptly illustrated by his six piano concertos, composed between 1934 and 1964. Malipiero himself characterized the stance assumed by him in his concertos as follows: “All the concertos are orations. A voice is heard, and the rest (of the orchestra) follows it in the sense of a listening crowd to which it has something to say or which would like to say something to it.”
Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5 are world première recordings.
