About

Maurice Heugen starts this recital with two works by Philippe Gaubert, remembered as one of the greatest of French flautists, as well as conductor and prolific composer. The Sonata was inspired by the playing of Gaubert’s teacher, Paul Taffanel, who had followed a similar career.

Liebermann’s two-movement Sonata is a recent work, written in 1987 for Paula Robison and Jean-Yves Thibaudet. The instant success of this work has led to it being one of the most frequently performed flute works in America.

Walter Gieseking is not usually thought of as a composer, but his rarely heard Sonatine deserves to be better known. It is music of a lyrical nature and with its refined chromaticism, reminds us of the music of César Franck.

Van Leeuwen pursued a successful career as a flautist in Berlin and in Vienna, eventually settling in the USA in 1921. His Polka Caractéristique, for piccolo and piano, was written during his time in Vienna and dedicated to his pupil, Jacques van Lier.

The Debussy work was originally written for piano but was soon adopted by flautists, including Gaubert, who made an early recording of it in 1919.
