About

Rupert Ignaz Mayr was both a violinist and a composer. A large proportion of his oeuvre was church music, largely influenced by Italian styles. However, Mayr spent some time in Paris where he met Lully, who helped him incorporate French influences into his works. The chief characteristic of Mayr's offertories is their close thematic integration, in which voices and instruments share equally. It was whilst working at the Munich court that Mayr wrote his Confitebor Tibi.

"Mayr’s works bear witness to his remarkable creative resources, bringing constant variety both in terms of thematic material and with respect to the ‘affectation’. His music for church and liturgy, output of high quality and fine sensitivity, was and is intended to lead listeners past and present to pray." - Conductor Doris Hagel on Mayr
