Mystery (Rosary) Sonatas and PassacagliaArtists

Each sonata employs a different tuning of the violin. This use of scordatura, (altering the tuning of the strings), transforms the violin from the pleasures of the Five Joyful Mysteries (the Annunciation, etc.) to the trauma of the Five Sorrowful Mysteries (the Crucifixion, etc.) to ethereal nature of the Six Glorious Mysteries, starting with the Resurrection Sonata, where the two middle strings are symbolically crossed over to Sonata No 16, a passacaglia for solo violin with standard tuning, completing the cycle.
The young violinist from Rome, Riccardo Minasi, began his international career at an early age. It has taken him to the most famous concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Centre in New York, Vienna’s Concert Hall and Music Society, the Barbican Centre, London, the Champs-Élysées and Châtelet theatres in Paris, and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. His knowledge and specialisation in the renaissance, baroque and classical repertoire has made him a much sought after leader. He has played under the baton of conductors such as Jordi Savall (Le Concert des Nations), Giovanni Antonini (Il Giardino Armonico) and Ottavio Dantone (Accademia Bizantina).
