About

Discover musical gems from a bygone age with our new recording of Aeolian Company piano rolls (1921) authentically performed by the accomplished pianolist Rex Lawson.

For over thirty years Rex Lawson has been at the forefront of pianola music throughout the world. He has given concerts throughout Europe and North America, broadcast on hundreds of occasions and is well represented on both LP and CD.

He has brought the pianola back to the highest level of international concert-giving, from Carnegie Hall to the Last Night of the Proms, under conductors such as Pierre Boulez and Sir Andrew Davis.

The piano rolls included in this release were issued by the Aeolian Company of London in 1921 and the compositions of the series received their first performances at the feet of Reginald Reynolds, the Aeolian Company’s chief pianolist in October of that year at Aeolian Hall in New Bond Street. The works were composed in response to a request made by Edwin Evans, the British music critic, to a number of British and European composers and the results are varied both in terms of the music itself and in the use of the pianola.
