About
These are lively and subtle performances by two outstanding soloists in the early music scene, with enlightening liner notes by lutenist Nigel North, making his ECM debut. This is poetic music of great charm and melody, sung with a pure and crystal-clear voice that conveys the songs’ natural beauty, their humour and serene simplicity.
Published in London, Robert Dowland’s A Musicall Banquet is an unusual and innovative collection of lute songs, the first book of its kind in England which includes songs in Italian, French and Spanish. Robert Dowland emphasizes this aspect in his title by making an analogy with a banquet or feast of many fine dishes: "A Musicall Banquet furnished with varietie of delicious Ayres, Collected out of the best Authors in English, French, Spanish and Italian.” Among the composers are Robert Dowland’s famous father, John Dowland with his famous ‘In Darkness let me dwell’, Giulio Caccini with ‘Amarilli mia bella’, Pierre Guédron, Anthony Holborne, Daniel Batchelar and others.
German soprano Monika Mauch was last heard on ECM on the hugely successful Bach CD 'Morimur' (461 8952) alongside the Hilliard Ensemble and Christoph Poppen. During her studies in Trossingen and Paris she began specializing in early music and has sung with such groups as Ensemble Daedalus of Geneva, La Cappella Ducale of Cologne, the Ensemble Européen William Byrd in Paris, Les Cornets Noirs in Basel, L'Arpa Festante of Munich, and with Double Band under the direction of René Jacobs.
English-born Nigel North is among the foremost lutenists today. His extensive discography includes complete cycles of lute music by Bach and John Dowland, alongside many recordings with the ensemble Romanesca (with Andrew Manze and John Toll).
