About

The seventh and final release in the series of recordings presenting the complete works of the highly influential 17th century composer Dietrich Buxtehude is the third disc to feature the composer’s vocal and choral music. The cycle is being produced by one of the world’s foremost experts in early music performance, the Dutch keyboard player and musical director Ton Koopman, who as president of the International Dietrich Buxtehude Society is considered to be the leading authority on his music.

Buxtehude the organist expanded his activities as a vocal composer in an unprecedented way. His oratorios have not survived, but the many other vocal compositions that have come down to us represent a substantial body of works. These particularly include larger and shorter chorale settings of various kinds, sacred concertos (i.e. motets with differentiated instrumental accompaniment), and multi-movement structures consisting of concertos, arias, and chorales that were later referred to as cantatas.

As with volume V of the series, this album presents a mixed selection of works in the above mentioned genres and features arias, concertos and cantatas. The last recording in the cycle, Harpsichord Works Volume 2 (CC72245), was picked as one of the monthly choices in the BBC Music Magazine, and received plaudits from many other sources.
