About
In Manon Lescaut, masterfully conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos, Licia Albanese is so totally alive and absorbed in her part, so varied and responsive in her colouring of words, that any tenor would risk sounding somewhat rigid and passive alongside her.
Björling as Des Grieux does not entirely avoid that risk (he projects words clearly and often caressingly), but it is rare to hear him interact with so much involvement when singing in Italian and vocally he has had no real rivals in the role since the Second World War.
Live performances from the MET - 1948 and 1956.
