About

Libretto downloadable from www.brilliantoperacollection.com

One of a series called the 'Opera Collection' – an extensive new collection of operas, ranging from baroque to the twentieth century, many of which are award winners.

Bellini ranks along with Donizetti, Rossini and Verdi as one of the great 19th-century Italian opera composers. He died tragically at the age of 34, having composed La sonnambula, Il pirata, I Capuleti e i Montecchi, I puritani and Norma.

Blessed with a fine libretto and a strong plot, the title role of Norma is one of the most taxing roles in the repertoire, and one with which Maria Callas was particularly associated. The aria ‘Casta diva’ became her signature piece. This recording from La Scala in 1954, whilst not technically perfect, captures Callas in her element.

For a generation of opera-goers, Callas was Norma, and nobody since has come near challenging her hegemony in a role for which her timbre, declamation and dramatic understanding so particularly suited her … Serafin’s direction remains as definitive as it always was. Anyone wanting to hear why Callas has always been considered a unique phenomenon need look no further than these CDs … The phrasing and pronunciation, the weight and shape of meaning of the music are perfectly conceived.’ - Gramophone
