About

The Italian opera, the most international of all genres, became famous throughout Europe in the 19th century. An Italian composer who got a job at any european court at that time would be highly paid and have creative free reign - two things he couldn’t necessarily expect in his own country.

Giovanni Paisiello was one of these who received an offer he couldn’t refuse - from the Russian court of the Empress Katharina. He remained in Russia until 1784 and wrote more than a dozen operas there. One of them was this drama giocoso in two acts, which was first staged in February 1779 at the theatre of St. Petersburg Ermitage.

The fresh and well-written music with which Paisiello illustrates the different characters of the two sisters, delighted the Russian Empress.
