“Coming from backgrounds of both English choral music and jazz, I have always been obsessed by musical connections. I love to perform music of one culture with singers of another, to help performers to share an awareness of music in different contexts.
I have had the good fortune to travel around the world every three years with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. In the '90s I was invited to work with choirs in South Africa, and became fascinated the rhythms and sounds of the music of the African continent. Then in 2003 a Churchill fellowship to Mexico and Cuba opened up new vistas of musical connection for me.
One day I heard elderly musicians perform the Son Jarocho (The song of the black man) in village tavernas, played on local instruments in Veracruz, handed down through a four hundred year old oral tradition. The very next day I had the chance to listen to an Afro-Carribean jazz ensemble performing unbelievably complex music which arose out of that mix of cultures. The pieces of choral music found here are similarly hybrid, because in most cases they combine elements from more than one source…”
