About

Simon Rattle Edition: The Second Viennese School

The group of Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951) and his pupils Alban Berg (1885-1935) and Anton Webern (1883-1945) are sometimes referred to as the Second Viennese School, the First one being Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) who taught Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) on his arrival in Vienna from Bonn whilst one of Haydn’s friends, Antonio Salieri (1750-1825) – the rival of another of Haydn’s friends, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) – taught Franz Schubert (1797-1828) who was one of the coffin-bearers at Beethoven’s funeral.
