About
“Ah yes! I remember it well.” Honoré’s immortal line from Gigi could equally apply to the whole astonishing output of Lerner & Loewe, the duo of lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner and composer Frederick “Fritz” Loewe, second only to Rodgers & Hammerstein as creators of some of Broadway's most successful musical shows, including Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon, My Fair Lady, Gigi and Camelot.
The greatest of all these was My Fair Lady from 1956 with its wonderful score of such unforgettable melodies as On The Street Where You Live, I Could Have Danced All Night, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly? and Get Me To The Church On Time. The perfect casting brought fame to Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews, and a new lease of life to Stanley Holloway’s career. In New York it ran for a record-breaking 2,717 performances and in London for 2,281.
Impossible to top perhaps, but Lerner & Loewe’s next triumph was the 1958 film musical Gigi, which broke the Oscar-winning record in collecting nine awards, plus a special one for Maurice Chevalier – ideally cast alongside Leslie Caron (whose songs were sung by Betty Wand) and Louis Jourdan.
Retrospective uniquely offers virtually all the songs from both these heavenly scores.
